All

We have been doing our best to hold off this moment, but I think we are going to need to succumb at last. As you all know, currently you only need to click a button and fill in a standard form to register for Puzzletome. However, we are now getting somewhat overrun with spam postings on the site. This normally takes the form of someone registering and making one post on the same day that contains some sort of advertising. In reality, these are probably created by some sort of robot that hooks into our forum software (phpBB).

If you *haven't* seen any/many of these then this is thanks to the diligence of my fellow admins and ASA in getting things out of view very quickly.

One step that we feel may assist in preventing this is for registration to require the further step of waiting for an automatically generated email and clicking the enclosed link before you can post. (You've probably seen this on many other sites.) We hadn't done this before because we wanted Puzzletome to remain as user-friendly as possible, but alas we believe the time has now come.

Hopefully you will understand the reasons behind this move. Of course as existing users it won't affect you too much, but anyone to whom you recommend the site has a little bit more to do before they can get in.

I prefer the email thingy to the one where you have to look at some squiggly letters and guess what they are. I always get those wrong!

Tough. Both are needed to get rid of the current spate of spurious registrations on the site. We will *not* allow people to sabotage our community by registering with the intention of promoting porn, dodgy pharmaceuticals and so on.

If I recall, one of the links suggested that it was a helpful, alphabetical listing of available pharmaceuticals (no word on their dodginess, but I can hazard a guess).

I'm sure hoping that ordered list doesn't show up in a future Series Series contest!

Hi, Stretham.

I've come across two or three of those spam postings and then noticed, with appreciation, their disappearance.

I think anything you can do to rid the site of those unwanted blemishes is well worth the extra ten seconds of time/effort on the puzzlers' part.

I'd even be happy to re-register myself if that's what's needed.

For what it's worth, I fully support the change and will continue to recommend this site to anyone who will listen!!

Thumbs up

I agree with my teammates. I'm all for anything that keeps this site SPAM-free. I'd be willing to do anything reasonable to accomplish that, even type in those squiggly letters that Andy hates. Sometimes it's almost like another puzzle to solve!

I just think technology has progressed to a point where computers are now better at optical character recognition than I am. Sigh. I'm analogue in a digital world...

Tried in Chrome and Firefox as well as Comodo Dragon( chrome based) and Pale Moon- based on Mozilla

Just tried it and it works OK, so there must be something blocking things at your friend's end. I'm responding to your PM with further assistance.
