Congratulations to Crackerjacks (Chris Wales, Jeremiah Johnson, Jeremy Conner, Nick Baxter...and whomever else uncredited may have contributed to the team's success) for finishing 1st (in non-Australian competition and overall) in the 2012 SUMS puzzle hunt!  A well-deserved victory, indeed!

Indeed, and as someone who also competed and therefore saw how impenetrable some of the puzzles were, I can state that it is a very impressive performance. Thumbs up

I'll echo that echo.

As Stretham pointed out, that contest included some extremely tough nuts... not only did they win, they managed to solve every puzzle!

Kudos!

I'll echo the echo that echoed.....    Very Happy

It really was a fantastic effort - I kept watching that leaderboard those last few days hoping they would stay on top.

Awesome work, Crackerjacks!!
Thumbs up

Thank you everybody for your kind words.   Agreed, it was a tough contest but for once (and quite unusually for us), most of our team were able to be around for the majority of the contest and so we became quite focused, especially towards the end when we realised that winning the thing was actually turning into a real possibility.  The puzzles were mainly very good apart from a few which were let down by some very ambiguous and vague cluephrases (as the guess count on some of them clearly show!)

However, a good time was had by all and I'm now looking forward to next year's Australian events.

Thanks - as a backstory, I was extremely impressed by Puzzletome's performance at this year's CiSRA contest (http://puzzle.cisra.com.au/teamstats.php) - where we were left far behind by several feats of PT genius.

I found these puzzles a bit easier, but that may just have been a personal thing; this year's CiSRA had some real doozies.  But all-in-all I think PT's performance there served to inspire me here to keep plugging away.  It's nice to see us all at the tops of these leaderboards.

Your words are all too kind, and I look forward to many more years of puzzling with y'all, be it as guinea pigs for your contests, competitors for those of others, or perhaps even teammates.

Cheers, PT.  And congrats on your own well-earned successes.

My teammate and I tried SUMS for the first and possibly last time this year. Could have used a few more brains working on it. Probably could have solved one or two more puzzles but we were too frustrated by apparent lack of progress. After seeing most of the solutions, I was glad to have quit when I did. Was told that puzzles were less arcane in previous years...

I would agree with those thoughts. There were several puzzles that *no* team could solve without some or all of the hints. In my opinion, this is the hallmark of a badly written and/or obscure puzzle. Combine this with the number of typographical and access problems that had to be fixed whilst the contest was active, and it all seems to add up to quite a poor level of testing. Which is a shame because some of the puzzles (almost entirely earlier ones) were as usual very good.
