I was wondering if it would be possible to review all the guesses you'd made on a puzzle? This would be useful when tackling a puzzle that takes a couple of days trial and error to review what trains of thought were taken etc.
I guess I could keep a list myself, but I figure you have all the info stored anyway |

yeah - that would be helpful - so we don't keep trying the same thing more than once. |

Yes and no. We compress the database once a day (about 20.30 GMT) and until then we have all the answers each user tried since the previous compression. This enables us to check for brute forcing etc. After that, although we keep all the answers they're not linked to individual users. So even in theory we could only do it for up to the last 24 hours. And it sounds like you want to remember stuff from a few days ago.
Is this perhaps the place to point out that you should be working them out instead of making loads of random guesses?

aaaahhh.... I was wondering how you managed to keep everything from slowing down RP-style. Compressing the db would indeed solve the problem. _________________ Never give up, keep on playing

If I can't remember whether I've tried a particular answer (not only for PT but for contests generally), I start typing it into the submit box and I get a drop down box which shows me all the answers I've already submitted which start the same way. For example if I had tried "one two three", "one day" and "one morning" as answers for any of the puzzles and I then typed in "one", those three answers would appear automatically so that I would know I'd already tried entering them.
Can't recall now if that's an automatic feature on WindowsXP or whether I had to make it a specific setting somewhere, though. But it's very useful, anyway, particularly if I'm not sure whether I tried something both with/without spaces or with/without an article...

Pretty sure that's "Auto-Complete", T22. I have it turned off.
When I'm working a puzzle, I keep my work in Notepad or Excel or some other program (depending on the puzzle) and keep my own history of things I've tried. Saves me time, and sometimes I see something in the pattern of what I've tried that gives me another avenue to explore. |

Yeah, it's auto-complete. You can enable it in the browser options. _________________ Never give up, keep on playing

I know from talking with my team-mates that one of us has a sense of humour on 4.5 - the answer was almost a novel _________________ Growing old is INEVITABLE. Growing up is OPTIONAL |
